Microsoft Outlook Express Expert Advice

Select Topic:

Disable Microsoft Outlook Express Splash Screen

Microsoft Outlook Express 5 provides no option for deactivating the splash screen which is displayed while the program loads. However, this can be done by adding a DWORD Registry Key named NoSplash with value 1 to the Outlook Express registry branch of the Windows Registry. You should be able to find the Registry Entries for Outlook Express under

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Identities\{xxx}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

or

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{xxx}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

{xxx} usually contains a GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier), i.e. a rather lengthy string of hex numbers such as {01234567-89AB-CDEF-0123-456789ABCDEF}.

Warning

The Registry Editor (regedit.exe) can be used to add Windows registry entries. However, erroneous registry entries can cause serious problems. You should ask your system administrator or a more experienced user for assistance if you aren't familiar with the Registry Editor.

PC/Windows crashes immediately after starting Outlook Express

This could be caused by a certain Email with a large recipient list to be displayed in the preview pane. I.e., the following conditions are probably true:

  • you received an Email with a large recipient list
  • the When starting, go directly to my 'inbox' folder option from the Tool - Options... - General dialog is activated
  • the Show Preview Pane option from the View - Layout... - Layout dialog is activated

To overcome this problem, the Show Preview Pane option from the

Layout...Left Mouse Button (LMB)

function should be deactivated. But how? Outlook Express keeps crashing the PC immediately after being started! Here is the solution: Start Outlook Express Newsreader. The easiest way to start the Newsreader is probably through the

ToolsLeft Mouse Button (LMB)
Mail and News ->Left Mouse Button (LMB)
Read NewsLeft Mouse Button (LMB)

function. Alternatively, the Outlook Express startup executable msimn.exe from the Outlook Express programs directory (usually C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\) could be called with the /outnews option from either the Windows

StartLeft Mouse Button (LMB)
Run...Left Mouse Button (LMB)

function or from an MS-DOS Prompt as in

> "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews Return/Enter Key (CR)

Once the Newsreader runs, the Layout dialog from

ViewLeft Mouse Button (LMB)
Layout...Left Mouse Button (LMB)

should be used to deactivate the Show Preview Pane option. Note that this option might not be changeable unless, e.g., a folder view is selected. Use

ViewLeft Mouse Button (LMB)
Go to folder...Left Mouse Button (LMB)
Local FoldersLeft Mouse Button (LMB)

to select a folder view. After deactivating the Show Preview Pane option, the Outlook Express Mail program should start without problems. Delete the bogues Email from your Inbox folder (and, subsequently, from your Deleted Items folder) before reactivating the Show Preview Pane option.
